More Los Gatos kitchens have a serious wine column than almost anywhere else we cover. Between the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation a few minutes up the road and the entertaining-scale kitchens common in the Almond Grove and foothill estates, a multi-zone Sub-Zero column is often holding a collection worth more than the appliance itself.
That raises the stakes on a quiet failure. A column doesn't usually die dramatically — it drifts, and a couple of degrees of unnoticed drift over a season is exactly what a long-term cellar can't afford. Here is how we read the three faults we see most.
Dual-zone drift: when one half stops keeping its promise
A multi-zone column runs an upper and lower compartment at different setpoints — reds a touch warmer, whites and sparkling cooler. When one zone drifts toward the other, the cause is usually a tired damper, a failing zone sensor, or an evaporator fan that's no longer moving air the way the control board expects.
We diagnose this by reading actual compartment temperatures against the displayed setpoints, then checking the sensor resistance and fan behavior — not by swapping parts on a hunch. A column that shows the right number on the panel while the shelf reads four degrees off is a sensor or airflow story, and it's fixable without touching the sealed system.
Condensation and the foothill humidity question
Owners often worry that beads of water inside the column mean a refrigerant problem. Far more often it's a door seal that's lost its grip, letting humid room air slip in to condense on the cold glass and racks. In an estate kitchen that's open to a great room, there's simply more moist air available to find a weak gasket.
A seal that no longer pulls flush is a bounded, genuine-part repair. We test the gasket and the door alignment first, because replacing a sealed system over what turns out to be a ten-dollar airflow path helps no one.
Runs but won't chill: protecting the collection while we diagnose
A column that hums along yet can't reach temperature is the one to act on immediately. It can be a sealed-system fault, a stuck condenser fan, or a control issue — and the difference matters enormously to the bottle count inside.
